The Healthy “Tiramisu” Date Cake ☕️🍰

↓ Jump to Recipe

Moist, fudgy, and deeply chocolatey — with dates and coffee doing all the heavy lifting instead of butter and sugar. The Greek yogurt topping gives it that perfect tiramisu vibe.

Healthy Tiramisu Date Cake

If you love coffee and chocolate, this cake is going to become your new obsession. Medjool dates blended with hot brewed coffee create a naturally sweet, caramel-like base that keeps this cake unbelievably moist — no butter, no refined sugar, no compromise on flavour.

Medjool dates and coffee

The Greek yogurt topping — sweetened with just a touch of maple syrup and dusted with cocoa — is what gives it that tiramisu moment. Rich, creamy, with that classic bitter-sweet cocoa finish. Once you try this, you’ll wish you knew it sooner.

      Instructions
      1. 1
Make the date paste. Pit the dates and pour hot brewed coffee over them. Let sit 5 minutes, then mash into a smooth paste with a fork. Mixing date and coffee paste
      2. 2
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Line your baking tin with parchment paper.
      3. 3
Mix in the remaining ingredients — add oat flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and egg to the date paste. Fold in chocolate chips. Mix until just combined, don’t overmix.
      4. 4
Pour into the tin and spread evenly. Spreading cake batter
      5. 5
Bake for 25 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Let cool completely before adding the topping — at least 20 minutes.
      6. 6
Make the topping — mix Greek yogurt with maple syrup until smooth. Spread over the cooled cake, then dust generously with cocoa powder. Spreading yogurt topping
      7. 7
Slice and serve. Refrigerate leftovers — the yogurt topping sets beautifully overnight and the flavour deepens. Even better the next day. 🤤
      Notes
      • 🌴 Use Medjool dates — they’re larger, softer, and naturally sweeter than regular dates. Worth it.
      • ☕️ Hot coffee is key — it softens the dates quickly and adds depth of flavour to the cake.
      • ❄️ Cool completely before topping — warm cake will melt the yogurt layer.
      • 🍫 Dark chocolate chips recommended for the best flavour balance.
      • 📦 Storage — refrigerate covered for up to 4 days. Gets better overnight!
      • 🌾 Make it vegan — swap the egg for 1 flax egg (1 tbsp ground flax + 3 tbsp water) and use coconut yogurt.
